First the Bad News.
Alabama is one of the last states in the US which has no state dam safety regulations. Based on current information in the Nation Inventory of Dams, Alabama has over 2,267 dams of which 215 are high hazard dams. However, there is a bit of controversy on how many dams Alabama has since there is little regulatory oversight. One recent study said there may be an additional 10,000 dams that need to be inventoried.
Now the Good News.
Since 2002, a safe dams advisory group drafted model legislation, which still has not enough support through the Alabama State Legislature. However, 2008 may be the year. Stay tuned.
